Now, 51 percent say the statues should be removed, while 47 percent disagree. However, few voters — just 10 percent — support the wholesale destruction of pro-Confederate structures after their removal. And a similarly low share — 16 percent — want those monuments to remain just as they are. Far more popular are two more moderate options; 41 percent say the statues should be removed from public spaces and placed in museums, while 31 percent support keeping the monuments where they are but adding plaques to offer historical context.
Republicans have moved little compared to the electorate at large. While this survey shows significant movement towards more recognition of racial discrimination and increased support for actions to address those disparities, one group is notable for the stability of its attitudes on race over the last 20 years.
While the share of those who say Black Americans are discriminated against has jumped by nearly 50 points among Democrats and about 13 points among independents since , the share of Republicans saying that Black Americans experience discrimination is virtually unchanged, moving from just 23 percent two decades ago to 26 percent now. Just 17 percent now say that Hispanic Americans experience discrimination, while 20 percent said the same in The racial group that Republicans are most likely to believe faces discrimination — with 28 percent stating that opinion — is white Americans.

Data on police and public encounters isn't always clear, but several studies provide insight on how race might influence the outcomes. Seven-in-ten U. Roughly seven-in-ten whites and blacks say this is never acceptable. Among Hispanics born in the U. Blacks are more likely than Hispanics or Asians — and much more likely than whites — to say that their race is central to their identity. Whites and blacks younger than 30 are less likely than their older counterparts to say their race is at least very important to their overall identity.
And while relatively few whites across age groups say being white is central to how they think about themselves, whites younger than 30 are among the least likely to say so. Among Hispanics, those born abroad are more likely than those born in the U. Hispanics and Asians are more likely than whites to say each of these have happened to them. Asians are more likely than any other group to say they have been subject to slurs or jokes because of their race or ethnicity.
The survey asked black and Hispanic respondents to identify the skin tone that best resembles their own using a modified version of the Massey-Martin scale. Among blacks, those with darker skin tones are more likely to say they have experienced racial discrimination generally, but skin color is not necessarily associated with having faced specific situations because of their race or ethnicity.
In fact, for blacks, being male and having higher levels of education are more consistently associated with the specific forms of discrimination asked about in the survey.
This survey includes an oversample of Asian respondents, for a total sample size of Asians. The sample includes English-speaking Asians only and, therefore, may not be representative of the overall U.
Asian adult population overall. Despite this limitation, it is important to report the views of Asians on race relations and racial inequality, as well as their personal experiences with racial discrimination, as the U. Asian population is growing faster than any other major racial or ethnic group. Measuring the attitudes of Asians on these topics is an important piece in understanding the state of race in America today.
Asians are shown as a separate group when the question was asked of the full sample. We are also not able to analyze Asian respondents by demographic categories, such as gender, age or education. References to whites, blacks and Asians include only those who are non-Hispanic and identify as only one race. Hispanics are of any race.
