The Local Group Policy Editor will open. Scroll to the bottom of the list and select Turn off Microsoft Defender Antivirus. Select Disabled or Not configured. It might feel counter-intuitive to select these options because the names suggest that you're turning Microsoft Defender Antivirus off. Now that you have uninstalled any existing anti-spyware or anti-virus programs, type "Defender" into the Start menu again, and click on the program. If it's disabled, you will be greeted with a message telling you so, and there will be a text link, saying: "Click here to turn it on".
Go ahead and click the link to enable Windows Defender. If your computer isn't already protected, you should be taken to the Windows Defender dashboard. Defender may well be out of date, so it is advisable to start by updating its protection software. Click on the Updates button, and follow the steps to install the latest Defender updates.
When you see a comforting green bar, Defender has been fully updated, and is ready to protect your computer.
If you click on the Tools link, and then on Real-time protection in the left-hand pane, there are also a number of additional options for scanning downloads, attachments and programs that are well worth enabling, too.
To turn off Windows Defender perhaps to install or return to using alternative anti-spyware software follow these steps. Click the Start menu or on the start screen in Windows 8 and type "Defender" into the search bar, and click on Windows Defender when it appears.
You will be taken to the program's dashboard. On Windows 7 or 8, go to the Tools menu, and then click on Options. From here, click on Administrator in the left-hand pane, and, finally, uncheck the box for Use this program'. On Windows 10, things are a little more direct. Now toggle the Real-time protection setting from On' to Off'. You can also turn off the Cloud-based Protection option if you wish. You will then be notified that the program is off.
You may have to expand the Windows Security window by clicking the square in the top-right corner of the window before proceeding. You'll find this link in the middle of the menu. Click Yes when prompted. Doing so will turn back on Microsoft Defender. Method 2. Determine whether you intentionally installed an antivirus program. If you did install an antivirus program on purpose, you should know its name.
If not, another program probably installed the antivirus software as part of its installation process, meaning you'll need to look for a program whose name you don't recognize. Click Apps. It's in the middle of the Settings window. Sort by date if necessary. If you don't know the antivirus program's name, you can narrow it down by showing the most recently installed programs and working backward from there. To do so, click the "Sort by" menu, then click Install date in the drop-down menu.
If you know the antivirus program's name, skip this step. Find the antivirus program. Scroll through the list of installed apps until you find the program that you need to uninstall. If you didn't intentionally install an antivirus program, you'll probably find the program you need to uninstall near the top of the list of programs if your Windows Defender only recently turned off. Click the program's name. Doing so expands the program's name to display an Uninstall button. Click Uninstall. You'll find this under the program's name.
Click Uninstall when prompted.
